It was late … he hadn’t slept in days … but he had to keep going coz he just needed to know what it was that was out there.

From outer to inner space, and all the bits in between, ‘Eric Needs To Know’  searches through the sounds that inhabit these realms, and sticks them together in various patterns … sometimes random, sometimes planned, but always interesting.

The sounds can be intense in one track, and drifty in another, but allow yourself to listen to them, and you’ll hear the layers within each.

He has been producing for nearly 10 years, but only recently has started to be satisfied with the pieces he has been completing.  Past outings have made it onto Belfast-based compilation CDs, and online radio, but it’s time for the chrysalis to spread it’s wings, and with his first solo album ‘Deleted & Restored & Dropped Again’, Eric Needs To Know will stand to answer those questions.

The title comes from having accidentally deleted a whole hard drive of audio work, covering about two years of production.  After the initial shock, a bit of fishing around on the net found a piece of software that would repoint the flags to all the data, and thankfully with all the file names intact.  Having backed up about half of the data things were looking good when the hard drive was dropped whilst moving it between two computers, damaging it irreparably and lost about a year of audio & video work ... nice!!!

Two years of building loops and snippets here and there came to a head in September 2005 when I took 3 weeks off and just sat in the studio going through everything I'd created up until then and stripped out the best parts and ideas.  I then focused on creating completed tracks that felt good to me ... whether they necessarily made sense in terms of song structure, sound acocmpaniment or anything else didn't really matter.

These tunes are the result.

The title comes from having just completed the album tracks, and whilst attempting to back everything up, a wrong button was clicked and the whole hard drive deleted.  After a small depression and couple of drinks, Twinkle came to the rescue with a prgoram, found on the t'interweb, that could rescue all the deleted files and put them back where they were supposed to be.

Hence 'Deleted & Restored' .. the album that almost never was.

"I wanted to have a go at getting to the Red Bull Music Academy in Rome in 2004.  You could either do a mix, or do a collection of tracks that you had produced.  So I put together a mixture of samples from podcasts they had of Bob Moog, from the year before's masterclasses, and mish mashed them a bit, then through in tracks that either I, or the Men In Speedos, had done for Red Label.  It was called The Moog Story, & unfortunately I didn't get selected, but maybe another time."

ART TRAIL, CORK

In 2005 Cork was the European City of Culture and Art Trail, a voluntary Arts organisation, were in their 10th year, and were hosting Soundworks for it's second year.

They presented a program of international, European and local artists, composers, writers, theorists and performers.

St Vincent's Chruch was the Open Submission venue for the selected international artists, one of whom was Gawain Morrison otheriwse known as 'Eric Needs To Know'.

Below is a series of photos showing all the 'speaker sculptures' that he created for his submission.

The concept was a look at the language used in creating electronic music and the dual terminology that exists for these words inside the music-making community and those outside it.

From 'Delay' to 'Envelope' there are terms that have very different visual connotations when used in the 'real' world and this was a humourous sequence of pieces showing those alternative views placed on top of a range of speakers as plinths.
